Princess 22 Stability

In all the pictures of the Princess 22 I've never notice much heeling at all. None of the pictures on the building CD showed the boat heeling much. I looked on Travis' site (lots of good stuff there) and didn't see Pilgrim heeling much there. Is this generally the case or have I just not seen any pictures with the Princess really heeling?

If the Princess Sharpie heels a little as it appears, that will really appeal to my wife. We sail a Mutineer 15 here on Lake Murray. A good gust of wind can push us over pretty hard. (We've never capsized but its probably just a matter of time.) She is OK when I have the tiller but gets really nervous if we start to heel too far and she is at the helm.

remember- the Princess 22 carries 400 pounds of lead on her keel. So she should be a pretty stable boat. We have pics of Pilgrim sailing reefed, but they are on the laptop, and the laptop right now is 4 hours away from me, along with Laura :cry: :cry:

Just looked- the first three pics in the folder on his site, labled "Pilgrim sails with Tehani" show Pilgrim with reefs in both sails. It was a bit gusty that day. The fifth pic in that series shows her JUST AFTER he shook out the reefs.

Thanks Ray. Ginny doesn't mind a the boat heeling some. I think 20 degrees is OK. It's when we get that sudden gust that takes us about 10-15 degrees further that bothers her. Like you say, the Mutineer requires fast reactions at times. We're looking for something a little more docile. I like sailing the Mutineer, just not all the time. And something a little drier would be nice. And Ginny wants a cabin that four of us can get into. The Princess fits all of these criteria (and oh so many more).

I guess I'm a little late to this party. The Princess 22 sails very flat, at least it seems so to me. I installed an inclinometer(?) (thing with bowed tube containiing a BB) thinking I would see how many degrees she heeled. but she never heels enough for me to even bother to look at it .

I've had her out in some fairly high winds, both reefed and not, and have only felt like I needed to release the mainsheet two or three times, when not reefed. I've never had her close to being rail-down, but she has fairly tall topsides.

I wonder if the Core Sound designs are this stable?

After all those great group cruises, how does pilgrim compare to the plastic boats of the same size? Like Catalina 22's, etc.. I would like to know what her speed potential is like under sail. Does she have a flat enough run to plane while under sail...similarly to the Core Sound 20?

well- let me tell you this way-

Hard on the wind, Tehani will slowly walk away and punches through stuff much easier, but let us crack off and the two boats are pretty even. Way off wind in light air, Pilgrim edged away from us- working sail only on both boats- if he had set his staysail he'd have left us

Of course, Tehani is about 7000 pounds loaded up and has a full keel.

so it 's not a real fair comparision.

Like Charlie said, hard on the wind is not her best point of sail...on any other tack, she will keep up with most of the stock 22 footers, and pass some.

It was blowing pretty good on that day Charlie is referring to, when I was sailing along with Tehani. There was a nice little swell coming against us, and hauled in tight, Pilgrim would punch through one and the next would slow her and push her off a little. I would have been better off to have eased the sheets a little and picked up some speed.

I don't know if she would plane or not - she hasn't yet I've had her up over 8mph in a pretty hard wind when I should have been reefed, but haven't had anyone aboard under the right conditions to lend a hand to really try her out in a stiff wind.

I have an 8hp Yamaha 2 cycle (too big ) that will push her at 8 mph wide open.
