Any fleets near Erie, PA?

Hi guys,

I've been lurking on the boards for awhile and thought I would introduce myself.

My name is David George. I work as a nurse in Erie, PA and just recently ordered plans for a vacationer.

I was curious, are there any weekender/vacationer owners near Erie?

I currently sail Pymatuning, Erie, and Lake Arthur. Chataqua is not too far away.

Any messabouts planned for the spring?

The CABBS group (Cleveland Ameture Boatbuilders Society) does a week-long messabout at Jamestown Campground on Pymatuning which several Stevenson builders attend around fathers day. Contact Jim Stumpf.

I am in the greater Cleveland area in Parma, if you ever feel like a short road trip come down and visit my shop and the fleet including the Vacationer and my current project a Kingston 15. Come spring if you would like to test fly a Vacationer we could hook up at Pymatuning for some of the best sailing that Ohio/PA has to offer.

Just a side note my Vacationer is up for sale for about what it would cost for materials and it sits on a new trailer. If you would like to talk about it email me if not that is the last you will hear of that matter from me. It is a shamless sales plug but what the heck.

Good luck and I hope to get a chance to meet you on the water some time, the rest of the Erie Fleet of the BYYB has moved to warmer sailing grounds so it is good to hear from some new blood.

Hey Dave is Meadville where Casey's ice cream and that foot long hot dog resturant are off of 322? The Stumpf's love their ice cream.

You got it.

It's called Eddie's Footlong.

Althought the ice cream joint right next door is new. The old tradition was to get a footlong at Eddie's and then go back towards Conneaut lake to an Ice Cream stand called "Hank's Frozen Custard".

Another nice spot if we ever cross paths out this way is the Conneaut Lake's Station #3. It's a volunteer fire hall that is new in the last several years and overlooks the water. They also have courtesy docks across the street. They have good food and cheap beer. They make most of there money from drawings and various instant lottery tickets so their food and alcohol remains very inexpensive. The balcony overlooking Conneaut Lake is quite nice hang out at. My wife and I go there quite a bit in the summer months.

P.S. Which part of pymatuning are you guys sailing in? North or South of the causeway?

I used to put in with my Hobie at the public launch at the base of the causeway on the south side in Pennsylvania.

I have heard that there is also a pymatuning yacht club which has following of sailboats.

Btw the way my other stomping ground for sailing is Muskegon, MI. If you guys have never been out to lake Muskegon you are missing out.

I go out there to visit my inlaws who own an old 26 foot Amphibicon. beautiful place.

There are some very wonderful areas there that would be perfect for weekender/vacationer sailing. I can think of one right now. On the north side of the channel leading out to Lake Michigan there is a state park/campground that i believe you could sail upto and beach. The dunes and the trails are breathtaking.

We usually camp at the Jamestown campgrounds in PA at the south end of the lake. It is ideal because there is a protected lagoon inside of the campgrounds, you come off the main lake and around a turn back chanel and then there is no wind or waves no matter how hard it is blowing out on the lake. You can jump on the bank, tie off to a stake and walk to your site. The Pymatuning yacht club is just north of Jametown and has several active racing fleets, we make a habbit of getting in their way trying to get north up the lake. Jamestown firehall has a good fish fry every friday. We have eaten at Silver(something) up on Conneaut right acroos from the winery, the food is ok but they have an overlooking view of the lake also. We will have to try out the lake and the firehall accomodations sometime.

We have camped up at Linesville and done some kayaking on the northern end.
