THEY GOTTA BE NUTS !

Here's 3 of some photos I received, taken (Jan.29 - 30th/03), from an oil rig just off The Grand Banks, of the North Atlantic.

These are the kind of "seas" that the brave souls along the Eastern Seaboard,......... from MASSACHUSETTS. MAINE, NOVA SCOTIA and NEWFOUNDLAND, hand-lined for codfish from "Banks Dorys", off of "Salt-Banker" schooners, such as the Nova Scotia's BLUENOSE.

Those "Banks Dorys" were the ancestors of the Stevenson's Weekenders, Vacationers and PC's.

Pretty damn solid & impressive pedigree for SEAWORTHYNESS , in spite of what some "city bound air-heads" at another forum have to say ! !

Awwwwwwww, Shucks, I've been caught !

Do you recall that I told you that you had SNUPI to use when you vacationed up these 'about parts !

Well, I kinda, er' , sorta, was meanin' to mention............ , I mean , you bein' an experienced sailer an' all, ah, if, well you know, If 'n it wouldn't be too much trouble,........ would you mind terribly running Snupi off the coast a few hundred miles to the "Banks", and doing her sea trials?

I'll throw in a couple of bottles of Scotch !

Now Ray, YOU KNOW that all lows are counter-clockwise in the northern hemisphere !

SABLE ISLAND run! Absolutely !

Send me a signal from the weather stn. when you get there !

I got a bunch of FREE "dual instruction" twin engine time logged, flying Air Atlantic's twin Piper SENECA out to Sable Island from Halifax International. Air Atlantic had the contract to fly meteorologists out & pick them up, ...... I knew the CEO, Ian Laidlaw, pretty well, and the pilot had his instructors rating, soooooooo , that's how I got my "twin" rating, basically N/C ! I flew ~ he snoozed !

ANYWHO .... The waters and the WINDS out ther are pretty damn wild, even at the best of times ! For most landings, I used to what is generally called a "Carrier" landing ! That's when you fly with control power right down to rolling on the ground, event you have to "Get yo ass outta there", then stand on the brakes and kill speed once you've touched down !

( Wire meshed sand 1200 ft runway & No tail hooks ) :(

I'd say you'd be better off with sailing the Grand Banks than the wave / wind activity on the shallow water extending out for miles & surrounding Sable !

But..... It's your choice wherever you want to "Sea Trial" SNUPI, ............she'll bring you back ! 8) 8) 8)

Between seeing the one set of boats being tossed around like a toy and another being swallowed on a beach, I feel very small, and only too glad that I'll be doing most of my sailing on inland lakes, and the coastal areas of some of the Great Lakes on nice days.

my grandfather was one of those guys out handlining in the dories. though from ireland, his father ran a fishing fleet out of newfoundland. even from a tiny village, they usually lost 1-2 men a year. although he could have inherited his fathers fleet, he signed on as a hand on a tall ship and headed for America, where he ended up being a successful toolmaker. the one boat he did build was nothing spectacular, but sure made a lifetime impression on me. it was called MA 'N PA. speaking of MA, my grandmother was also from ireland. when her father died, her mother needed to remarry as soon as possible for economic reasons. her new husband wanted nothing to do with children so she was sent to aunts in America, where she was basically treated as a slave. my grandfather took her away and they ended up being quite a pair. whenever we have a hard day, we should remember what our ancestors had to endure.....

Ken, the Irish side of my family (mother's) has such similar stories of struggle and privation, sometimes too bleak for words and devoid of nostalgia. When I read the following lines, I think of them:

Out of Ireland have I come;

Great hatred, little room

Maimed me at the start.

I carry from my mother's womb

A fanatic heart.

Peace to them, to us and to the world.
