cs Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 In case some of you haven't seen this project I will post it here. Back when I finished my Micmac canoe I gave the "cheap" canoe to my daughter. Well to make a long story short, I dropped it on a stump and busted a hole in the bottom. So after looking for a design I designed my own with help. I will post some of the photos and renderings here for you. Here is some of my first stab at designs. And here is what we ended up with. It has a very slight V bottom. The bottom panels were S&G in and a chine log was used for the side. I actually used some of the extra chine material from the weekender for this. And here is a couple of shots with the first coat of paint on the outside. I used 2 sheets of luan plywood and Doug Fir for the rails. I covered the bottom with a layer of glass and used glass bubbles to fair. I used a plywood butt block to join the two sheets. In hindsight I should have used a glass butt block instead of a plywood butt. The plywood created a hard spot that was tough to get out. Chad Quote

cs Posted August 11, 2006 Author Posted August 11, 2006 Haven't had it in the water yet. It has a beam of just a hair over 20". It is pretty close on the bottom to the same size as the cheap canoe and it was plentystable. Chad Quote

cs Posted August 14, 2006 Author Posted August 14, 2006 Well despite the fact that I still need to paint the trim on the Ashley it went to the lake today. Today being the last day before school starts the kid wanted to take it out. So what am I to say? We loaded it up on top of the car and to the lake we went. Works pretty good. It is not as stable as the Micmac, but the Micmac is as stable as a rock. It's stability is similar to the cheap canoe, but a little less stable. With one person in it, of light weight, it is great. BTW this is what I had in mind when we worked on it. Also of the three canoes I've built this seems to be the fastest. It handles real well. With the both of us in it, it can be a little tricky. But with just one it is great. Chad Quote
