Is there anyone out there that has tried to modify their weekender by removing the cabin and opening up the seating space? If so what or how did yo do it?

There is a picture(s) on the Stevenson's website of a cabinless Weekender. You might just have to poke around there until you find it. It is a very elegant looking boat.

Karl Nisson is building an open Weekender in the SouthEast.

There have been some others as well. Most just don't attach the cabin and install a coaming around the cabin areas. They cut down the main bulkhead and install seating inside the cabin area. You would need to keep the main bulkhead and the forward bulkhead to retain integrity of hull and it would be a good idea to keep the side decks, lazerette and rear deck as well since these contribute significantly to the overall strength.

Several of the builders have built with smaller cabins by either building a bridge deck over the upper portion of the main bulkhead at the height of the seats and then fabricating a smaller cabin forward of the main bulkhead; or,

building with the main bulkhead just a bit forward of the existing location.

Capt. Jake's Fire Escape is one of these that the main bulkhead had been moved to the panel joiner in the bottom which extended the seating by several inches and shortened the cabin length. It works out well for additional cockpit space and gives two people room to stretch out a bit. But is still a bit crowded for more than three.

Bill Paxton built Surprise without a cabin. Very good idea and he's got an excellent boat.
