Andrew Posted February 20, 2006 Posted February 20, 2006 Hi all, It's has been waaay too long since I posted about having done any work on my weekender 'VAZTR'. That's because it's been waaay too long since I had actually done any work on her I broke my wrist over Christmas!! But the good news is that last week my 14 year old son helped me roll her onto her roof and I have been spending most evenings filling, sanding, fairing, fixing and generally making her ready for the fibreglass. I've also booked time off work over Easter so I might get some real time to spend on her!! I might just be ready for the middle of winter!! Andrew Quote

Fintan Murphy Posted February 21, 2006 Posted February 21, 2006 Hope it's not too late to suggest..... don't spend a lot of time fairing and sanding before fiberglass, as you'll just have to do it all again afterwards You don't want the surface to be too smooth, as you want a key for the epoxy to grab onto. Barry Pyeatt Posted February 21, 2006 Posted February 21, 2006 Regarding sanding/fairing plywood before glassing. The less you do to the plywood before glassing the better off you will be. When you sand plywood, you remove the softer grain and leave the harder annular growth rings. The result is a wavy surface. That is what you are trying to remove of course. But you can't sand it away, it will only get worse as you sand. End result is that the glass doesn't lay as well on the surface and you have a lot more filling/sanding/filling/fairing/sanding........... About the only thing you want to do to the plywood before glassing is to just break the surface a little with about 80 grit paper to give it a little "tooth" to grab onto. And of course fill any depressions to bring to fair, but try to not sand the ply surface to any extent at all. Quote

I'm hoping it'll ready by MY winter, but who knows the way I'm going it might take 'till next christmas!! A Quote
