Bill of Materials for Core Sound 20 Masts

I just purchased plans for the Core Sound 20 and they should be in my hands by Thursday or Friday of the this week.

I enjoyed the post about the ordering of the materials for the Core Sound 17 masts.

Does anyone have information for the Core Sound 20 masts. (Tubing sizes, wall thickness and length?). Since the square footage of the sails is similar, I expect the masts to also be similar.

The plans will tell you the designed sizes. I think the plans call for 10' of 3" .083, 8' of 2.5" .065 and 6' of 2" .065. I did not verify this.

I used 8' of 3" .065, 8' of 2.5" .065 and 8' of 2" .065 for each mast.

All T6 6061.

I also got my tubing from Online metals.

I have not had any problems with masts bending. However, after reading the posts from Austrailia, I suspect .125 would have been a better choice for the 3". Online did not have .083 when I ordered. 8' lengths are much cheaper to ship.

Enjoy the plans. Do what they say and you get a great boat.

My CS20 is almost half finished. Plans specify all .065 wall thickness: 12' of 3", 6' each of 2-1/2" and 2." Going with all 8' lengths is an idea, but check with Graham first.

Make sure you get the correct temper. We did not and broke 'em.

When I was building the Princess, we searched all over for .083. I had a metal supplier here in Victoria looking too, but no joy on the .083. We easily found .065, which Graham deemed not enough (for the 22 footer) so we wound up using .125 which is heavier than needed. But they seem to work well, or so Travis says after his few sails on the boat.

Used 12 foot sections of aluminum with the upper sections being tapered birdsmouth built from fir.
