Since I have quite a few boats on my build list, I figured I would attack the learning curve of spraying paint. But my advice to anyone attempting to spray paint, try your first job on scrap plywood, primed and sitting upright, to perfect your ability before painting a boat. Use an enamel paint, in the beginning with japan drier, and get the hang of it. Quote
Joe Nelson CS#35 Posted December 14, 2004 Author Posted December 14, 2004 Success!!! That Wagner HVLP system works really well! I would recommend it to anyone building boats. My first try with System Three primer and 20% thinning produced "speckle" like the trunk of a car. I tipped it off with a foam brush as you would with the roll and tip method. Being frustrated I added a splash of water to what was left in the gun and it painted great. This morning I started at 30% and it was about half speckle and half spray. Added more water to take it to 40% and it sprayed great! Nice thing is that it doesn't atomize like a high pressure spray system. I am wearing a resporator but the air is not full of paint and very little overspray, off target. Now it works great and I feel like I can get a good finish with my limited experience. Painting the interior of a boat is such a pain with roller and brush. I think that everyone should go out and spend $90 to $100 and get one of these. I looked at other systems from $300 to $600 and it seemed prohibative. Based on other success stories I bought mine and am very happy I did. Quote
Barry Pyeatt Posted December 14, 2004 Posted December 14, 2004 Had a chance to use one of the Wagner HVLP Conversion guns on a project just this week. Working with Clear System Three LPU. Went on like a charm. Lots of small parts and places to have a controlled spray, two coats and a link coat. Also sprayed some High Gloss Rustoeleum Black on primed/sanded plywood. Turned out magnificent. Would recommend that gun highly to anyone with an existing compressor, even a small one, that is looking at HVLP for spraying their projects. I think they are running about $139 at some of the mail order places. Easy to use and good from the go. Have also used a Chicago Phneumatic HVLP gun with a built in regulator with good results on both single part polyurethanes and LPUs with great results on a large dual stage compressor. (Really overkill, but that is what was there.) It too worked well on a small, contractor/job site compressor. Quote
