Well the detailed inspection is complete this afternoon. The only thing I forgot to do was lash the boom crutch to the taff rail or run a line over the mast at the crutch to prevent upward movement of the crutch. The wind eventually broke off both crutch feet that hooked under the taff rail and blew the mast/boom assy over onto the side of the boat. This not only split the mast severely at the tabernacle pivot; but, broke the pivot all to hell too! There are various minor dings here and there from debris hitting her. One bid one on the windward rail. Sure glad that hit the rail and not the side. Let's see what State Farm has to say. She should be covered under the homeowners policy. In any even the compression post is toast. THis is a good time to redesign the whole assembly I guess.

It sounds like you actually made out better than a lot of folks, even though you will need to spend some time to redo parts of this boat. We have, in parts of our homeowners policy, 10 percent of our value of the house, that covers any items surrounded by the property line. It maybe that you would wish to forgo it. But after this year, insurance maybe a real issue. I know this last year, even in our area, many insurance agencies pulled out. Thank heavens we have a big named firm for this year's coverage, that did not take it own the chest after Isabel. WHo knows what next year will bring, because so many of my neighbors lost all coverage, even with Nationwide, when coverage was due for renewal.

You are right Ray, I can rebuild it. The mast is easy, the compression post and the complicated tabernacle cuts were the hard part. That mast was too heavy anyway. Jan; the good, is a new, easier to raise mast and tab assembly. Gran always said it was an ill wind that blew no one any good. The boat dealers are jumping for joy! Mike compared to most of the folks west of here and on the islands this is just an annoyance. I am not complaining. The insurance is a wild card. After Opal SF raised rates and deductables while reducing coverage for storm related damage. I had debated moving my auto and truck coverage to the MH policy; however, I didn't want to give them any reason to review the house policy and possibly cancel it as well. For $200 per year it is best to let sleeping dogs lay. I suspect that after deductables and depreciation none of the insurance policies will pay much anyway.

NOw, let's reopen that counterweighted mast discussion... :)

Craig, I understand that there are no complaints in your reply. But it is a royal pain for sure, doing it twice, as they say.

I think you'll find that the insurance company isn't even going to look at the boat unless you have a seperate policy on it. Ray is correct, since it has it's own title just like your car it won't be under your homeowners.

Just had our insurance adjuster out yesterday and he confirmed my fears. The roof is a total, the pool screen enclosure is a tossup between heavy repair and total. Of course they are opting for the heavy repair. Luckily the interior damage was confined to the garage. Several other exterior areas were damaged but are repairable.

The real scary part is that he was saying that one of two things will happen in the future. They are either going to jack our rates up so high that we will go find a different company or they are going to start selling Florida policies to high risk coverage type companies. Either way our rates are gonna get very ugly real quick. He did say that they would pull out of Florida altogether if the law would allow it.

Man, we just can't catch a break this year.

Now it looks like Jeanne is going to make landfall about 30 miles north of here on either sunday or monday as a category 2. Of course this is right after the remnants of Ivan came through earlier this week.

Well at least we won't have to worry about trees getting knocked down this time. They're all pretty much already down!!

It's funny how current times introduce new words and labels into our vocabulary.

The situation in the Middle East gave us "weapons of mass destruction", or "WMDs".

Now, every time I turn on the TV, they're talking about some "cone of uncertainty"... "CUs"?

And here we go again... Inside Jeanne's CU.

We were supposed to start a badly needed, ten day vacation in the Keys on the morning they were evacuated for Ivan. I made the reservations back in April.

We did manage to salvage the last half of it, though, and had a great time.

By the time we got home, it was starting to feel like life was getting back to normal. Then that special came on the tube, about what our neighbors only 20 miles to the north, are still going through after Charley.

...Damn, I feel lucky.

Unfortunately I'm not only in the CU as you call it, that little black line that shows where the eye is going runs within about twenty miles of the house.

It's scheduled to hit us sunday afternoon and as of last night most gas stations are out and the grocery stores are picked over. The most bizarre thing is the new rash of generator thefts from homes. It's getting downright wacky around here!

Hang in there, we are all pulling for you. I went through a bunch of them in Conn. back in the 50's and 60's, including 2 in a week one year, 16 days with no power, a big hickory tree on the house, and a two-man hand saw to remove it. (the "good" old days - give me a Husquvarna any time.) Left Lake Charles yesterday morning in heavy rain from Ivan, and be darned if what is still left is not up here in the Ohio valley today!

Passed a lot of power company trucks from Indiana on their way home yesterday. Hope they don't have to turn around Monday and go back down there. My in-laws are down in Orlando for a wedding Sunday, and it looks like they are probably going to see Jeanne first hand.
