I didn't notice enough shrinkage to worry about. I don't think there is enough in 3 1/2 inches to be noticeable.

And I agree about loading up the questionable stuff first. I initially loaded the crucible with 100 pounds of wheel weights. After I had the one small blow up I picked up a shovel full and laid it across the mouth for a while before sliding it in- heated the lead and drove off moisture.

I can't emphasize strongly enough how important it is to have dry lead. As for protective clothing- I would have had on a pair of Walls insulated coveralls, but it was HOT HOT yesterday, so I had a long sleeve cotton shirt over another shirt.

And WEAR the respirator while you are slagging off or stirring the stuff. AND the face plate is quite important too. I speak from experience there.

And I was the ONLY one close around while I was working the stuff- The only time anyone else was there was while it was just sitting there heating. And of course when Laura took the pics but she was a loong way away.

You are most certainly not playing a game doing something like this. Be careful.
