Questions on blocks

I ended up buying some Harkin blocks. I have the wooden blocks all glued and shaped, and maybe I'll work on them this winter. (right now they are pretty ugly)

Anyway my question is...... the plan calls for a big bullet/swivel) for the forward mainsheet block. Why is this a swivel? Since the sheet leads from a non swivel block on the aft boom, how can it make a difference. Also ordered three big bullet blocks (one with a swivel) they sent me two non-swivel and one with a swivel and becket. Any ideas on how I can use the one with the becket? I know the jib calls for one, but I think it is too big. I don't want to have to send it back :?

It helps if its a swivel if the boom is out to port or starboard. A fixed block may cause the main sheet to exit the block at a sharp angle, and could affect your ability to sheet it in, or may cause chafing. An alternative that is entirely acceptable with today's very strong synthetic small line is to lash the block onto the boom, pendant style, so the lashing line can allow the block to twist. That will still allow a fair lead of the mainsheet back to your hand.

Some of the newer racing gear features lashing blocks on ... Harkin even has a line of blocks sold with small lashing lines. Its done to save weight on racers, but I think its even more appropriate with the neo-traditional look of the Stevenson's boats.

I agree with what Frank said. Sometimes the old fashion way of doing things is far better then some of the new fangled gadgets on the market. :wink:

I see so many fender clips to hold fenders on boats . :roll: What is wrong with a simple knot.

Insidently I find a lot of fenders floating around usualy in marshes where I canoe with the new fangled fender clip dangling in the water. I get all my fenders that way and pass the extras out to friends minus the clip

Jan, if you don't mind that it looks a bit messy, you can make do with the block/becket, just not using the becket. But it's a more expensive block so might justify returning it. Another approach is to add more mechanical advantage to your tackle by running the line differently, beginning with the becket. I like fooling around with tackle design, sort of like adding gears to a bike. You likely have good upper body strength for a woman with caring for your daughter, but the guys tend to like that "manly" feel of wrestling with the sheets. I prefer a gentle yank (contradiction in terms?).If there are other sailors around your way, try swapping any unwanted blocks via a note on a club bulletin board (the old fashioned kind). If we were a bit closer, I'd say just come on over and dig through my boxes. 8)

I thought about returning it. It cost 6bucks more or so. By the time I pay for shipping..... Anyway I like the idea of experimenting too so I'll try some things.
