Next project?

Hi everyone. Ok, I'm almost done with my weekender, and I'm wondering if I'm up for another project. I've been thinking of another project, Something larger, more seaworthy design (centerboard or swing keel, self righting) so I could sail outside of protected waters. I'm guessing something in the 19-25ft range would be ok. Plywood construction? Maybe. I considered the vegabond, but it looks too um... 80s, however it's a nice boat for plywood.

I have a long long time to decide... but I'd like to get started dreaming. Any suggestions on a next boat?

I've been facinated by Bruce Roberts Spray 22 for some time. I've seen one as far north as Glacier Bay and as far south as Trinidad.

Or even better yet would be the Spray 27. But that is outside the range you are looking for.

I really like the Spray 27, I think she would be perfect for Alaskan coastal sailing. If I ever get a real boat house, I would like to build her.

Before I even finished my Weekender, I started looking at my next boat project too. I really like the F-82 and F-33 folding trimaran from Ian Farrier. If I lived closer to the sea, I'd be even more anxious (and probably building), but since I'm 350+ mi. from the coast they are not very practical. See the designs at:

There's a pic on the site of an F-27 (I think) underweigh with her name proudly painted on her amas "Widespread Panic". What a Hoot!!

I've downloaded the study book and pull it out occasionally to slobber over it. Any building is a looooong way off for me.

After seeing your thoughts on it, I'm not sure I should admit it, but the Vagabond has the lead in my book as a next project. Not sure about the 80s look you referred to, but I am guessing you mean by the lack of a pronounced cabin....kind of a "cigarette" boat look. However, I think that is why I DO like it. Still ample headroom for sitting, and it is something you don't see everyday.

I guess that's why there is more than one design out there for us to choose from. Different strokes for different folks....

As a side note- my next real project might end up being another minicup. I have looked at the website for the 2.4m boats and think it would be cool to build a mincup along those lines: comfortable custom cockpit, a little more sail, foot pedal sterring for the rudder and maybe a little (but not a lot of) ballast. My minicup is fiberglass and plywood already so it would be nice to try it again and go for a nicer look.

How seaworthy do you think that vegabond is? Could it be sailed to cuba safely? I have no idea how to judge seaworthiness.

I've spent a lot of timeover at the Selway Fisher site lots of cool designs over there including swing keels hinged below the floor in the keel and large strip built boats designed for crossing the English Channel.
