Is -10 degrees F with 40 mph winds too cold for sailing?

Since I'm a teacher and schools are cancelled today becuase they can't get the busses started and children freeze quickly (large surface to volume ratios in the little 'uns), I was thinking it might be a perfect day for the maiden voyage of a little D4 I made. Good wind, and no fear of capsize what with the solid water and all. Or maybe I'll fill the bathtub in put it in there, or maybe I'll move Down Under for a couple of months, or...

These are the thoughts we turn to when we're really tired of winter.

On a more important note, after spending many hours on the phone calling places from Maine to Virginia trying to find Okoume for CS17 #110, I finally located a place. It's Harris Woodworking in Manchester CT, a specialty woodworking school about 3 minutes from my house. Good prices, and in stock.

:idea: I have made it a Cardinal rule that I will not sail if the wind is higher than the temperature. The rule was violated only once and as punishment, I received near frostbite in my gloved fingers. Hurt for a year. This rule applied even with ice boats.

What a bunch of wussies. As long as the ice is not keeping you from making headway...go for it. Only someone sane would think it too cold to go sailing

I have a D4 that I made several years ago. Never had it in that cold or high wind but don't use the bathtub. The little devil is great on rough water but at a standstill in water it is similar to sitting on a big ball it will tip and rock

Because I deemed discretion as the better part of valor, I didn't get to see how it handles on truly HARD seas. It looks like a bowling ball, but I bet it sails like a bathtub.
