Wilson, I took a bit of time to reread some of the hilarity on the Light Schooner Website from OZ. Tim, the Groucho Marx of sailors, has a page on different sail combinations for different situation. The main unreefed (no foresail) used in combination with the jib gives a balanced helm so that combo might do for your practice, especially with a crew of 2. Tim often sailed with just 2 even in races. He subsequently built another boat and gave the light schooner to his son for the sea scouts.

I just got my copy of paysons "new instant boats". Great drawings and info there . I used his book to make a 1/12 scale model of my light schooner. This seems to be being a big help in knowing how the full sized boat will work , it also lets me explore working options from my den/shop rather than spend money on full size components . . The only drawback to the scale model is my son keeps bringing it to the bathtub.

Here will be my question of the day. I will be using my boat in protected fresh water . How does one determine the size of line to use ? Anchor , sheets , halyard , etc . .... more questions coming soon..

You will find that most of the working lines that you will be handling will be most comfortable if they are at least 3/8" and that should be adequate for strength and comfort. Your mainsheet may be more comfortable if it is 1/2".

Anchor line is best chosen by the weight of the anchor and the demands placed upon it. I would drop a note to the people using the "Light Schooners" thru their websites and just ask what they find is the best for their use. I'm sure they would love the attention. :roll:
