Joel Posted July 2, 2003 Posted July 2, 2003 Ok........ I finally got the deck glued to the transom. As I look at my lazarette front I see it is a bit short. I checked the dimensions of the transom, the transom stringer placement (1-7/8" down from top edge) and the lazarette. Everything checks good according to the plans. My math (and tape measure) show the lazarette should be 21- 5/8" high, not 20-1/4" Any Ideas? joel Quote
Barry Pyeatt Posted July 2, 2003 Posted July 2, 2003 Yes, the lazerette sits a little more vertical than the transom and the transom sits down over the back edge of the deck. I had the same challenge as have a few others. I found that with the deck inplace, the height of the lazerette from the bottom to the deck and the deck to the bulkhead were almost the same. I had to pull my deck down to the lazerette stringer about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch to get it solid. It ended up forming a nice fair curve that way. I know some of the others have just made a taller lazerette but I don't know if they had it fit correctly or not. I do know that the deck has to be pulled down to fit on the bulkheads and the lazerette. When that is done it forms a nice curve from bow to stern. Hope that helps. Quote
Joel Posted July 2, 2003 Author Posted July 2, 2003 Thanks Barry, As soon as I get the clamps off of everything I will try to fit the lazarette front in. Right now it looks like it won't fit......but I thought the deck would never bend that much either! joel Quote
Derek Posted July 2, 2003 Posted July 2, 2003 Joel, glad to hear you're making progress again. Looking forward to new pics. Have had to abandon work on boat for a while to tackle "honey-do's", painting the house and garage, remodeling the bathroom, etc. I agree with Barry that once you stand the lazarette up and bend the deck to it, it makes for a very nice curve, fore to aft. Get your ratchet straps handy. Quote
Joel Posted July 3, 2003 Author Posted July 3, 2003 Derek, Progress is very slow here. The house projects do seem to get in the way. I try to do some work on the boat every weekend if possible. Hope to pick up the pace a little this month. I will post some new pictures as soon as I have something that looks different than the last pictures! joel Quote
rmckdo Posted July 4, 2003 Posted July 4, 2003 i recut a taller one...now i might try my original one first...did you cut out the access hloe prior to attaching? will weaken it fraid it will break if hole cut out first. Quote
Barry Pyeatt Posted July 4, 2003 Posted July 4, 2003 Rob, Yes, it will weaken it quite a bit and also allow it to not be a good curved shape. So I would recommend that you wait until it is installed to cut it out. I've found that it is far easier to work on the steering if it is all set and ready to go before the sides are put on and then just take it apart and place two deck plates either on the lazerette face just above the seats on either side or in the rear deck on the outside near the rails. This allows you to get to the steering a lot easier, although once it is installed and finished in there, it will probably be a loooooonnnnnngggggg time before you need to get back in there for anything other than drying it out from time to time. If you haven't considered it yet, you might look at T. Nelson Surbook's steering modification, it is really a well done steering system. Quote
Joel Posted July 7, 2003 Author Posted July 7, 2003 Pulled the clamps off the deck today. Everything held together. Here are a couple of pictures. I hope to work on the lazarette front this week. I'm still not sure I can pull the deck down far enough to close up the gap. I may cut a new piece that is 3/4" taller. joel [attachment over 4 years old deleted by admin] Quote
Andrew Posted July 7, 2003 Posted July 7, 2003 Joel Looking good! I notice that you cut the transom at the higher of the two versions and am wondering if you are going to trim this later and add the taffrail or keep it 'as is'? Has anyone else done this? or is it simply easier to cut to size (for the taffrail) first? Andrew Quote
Barry Pyeatt Posted July 7, 2003 Posted July 7, 2003 I think it would be difficult to cut the transom to fit before installing the deck. Not everyone has the curve of the deck stringer exactly as drawn. So if the taff rail option is your preference, (as drawn) I think it is easier to cut it after the deck is installed. Where I'm wondering, is about the fit of the lazerette with Joel and Rob as well. Both seem to need a taller lazerette than is called for in the plans. In my mind a couple things could account for that. One the angles of the transom and the stem may be off just a little and that might account for some difference. The trimming of the deck at the bow and fitting it to the stem might also make a little difference. I think the important thing to remember is that this is a wooden boat and none of the pieces are exactly to measurement. Small differences can add up to pieces not fitting exactly. But then that is one reason that the Stevenson's state that the plans are a guide. We all have to make some adjustments and keep on moving forward. Otherwise the Moaning Chair will get worn out and we just won't make any progress. Quote
rmckdo Posted July 7, 2003 Posted July 7, 2003 I actually ended up using the original...pulled down nice...I could not get the deck- top lazarette stringer to take, so after braking three, I ended up using 3" pieces placed the width of the lazarette front back. then with cargo strap bent laz and attached it with little problem all by myself! Joel Posted July 7, 2003 Author Posted July 7, 2003 Andrew, I think Barry is right , it would be hard to put the deck and transom together without the extra height. For now I am thinking of leaving the transom full height. It depends on how the sides meet up. I may also make a cutout along the top to allow for tiller movement. If it doesn't work out that way, I will use a router with a piloted bit to trim it flush. Barry, I did notice one thing. I did not fasten the deck to the stem before I glued the deck to the transom. Now I have a 1/2" gap at the front of the stem notch. I can pull the deck forward about 1/4". It should be OK I think I could make the lazerett front fit if I tried hard enough. But.... it looks like cutting a new piece will be the way to go joel Quote
Joel Posted July 8, 2003 Author Posted July 8, 2003 I cut a new lazarette front 3/4" higher than the plans call for. It is a little tight but I think it will work well. Just need to cut 2 stringers and install it. joel [attachment over 4 years old deleted by admin] Quote
Barry Pyeatt Posted July 8, 2003 Posted July 8, 2003 Well, it looks pretty good to me....how's it look to you? :? Hard to tell from a photo. But it looks like a good fit. If you stand back and look at the entire long sweep of the deck, does it look as if there is a bit of a hump where the lazerette is at now. :?: If so, then you might take a little off of it and pull it down to fit. If not, then I say go for it. Quote
