When I first pulled the Vacationer out of storage 3 months ago, I applied for membership over at the byyb and here. And they never granted me posting rights. Who's runnin' that show? Why would they give me the cold shoulder? And Bruce, I KNOW it made you smile when I posted about "him"... (It's making ME smile right NOW) ;D

To me it just seems like it had great workability. Roll and tip method yields a nice finish for me. And here's the kicker: After 8 years or so, the paint still matches the original. That alone is enough for me. (Or maybe it's just that when I smell those fumes it takes me back to those heady days when I was close to finishing it...?)

...especially when I'm applying it to my boat, yay!! The weather finally allowed me to pull the tarp and get acquianted with the boat again. After two months of off-and-on messing about with my vacationer, I finally reached a point today where I was applying paint. (Instead of epoxy). I'll have pix when I'm further along and it's worthy of a camera. It's been years (literally) since I've used Brightsides, but man do I love that paint. Me love painting. Me hate epxy-ing. ~ Cookie Monster

That's nice and all, but I have a question: Why are the tracks all within 16" of the ceiling? ???

The Vacay has been "home" out of dry storage for about 6 weeks now. As most of you know, I've undertaken a modest restoration project on it since rescuing it from the dark cavernous dry storage barn where it has resided for the past 3 years. Unused, unseen, un-thought-about, etc. Tonight I came to the conclusion that the only real way I'm going to stop applying more epoxy to this boat is to 1. Simply run out of the damned stuff and refuse to purchase more, or.. 2. Quit cold turkey and call it worthy of a fresh coat of paint as it stands. I think it was Sting who once said (something to the effect of) "You never really finish writing a good song. You just eventually accept where it's at and leave it at that." Or something to that effect. Therefore, Scenario 1 shall play out this week. Other than a few small spots around the cabin opening and back at the taffrail, I think I'm done applying epoxy and glass fabric. Here's a list of what I've done off-and-on over the last 5 weeks: 1. Sanded down to bare wood at numerous locations on the hull sides, and filled/faired with epoxy. Smooooth... 2. Sanded down to bare wood at several locations on the stem and filled/faired with epoxy. Smoooth (again)... 3. Filled all open gaps where the toe rail and top rub rail are joined back-to-back with thicked epoxy, and sanded, restained, and applied 3 coats of high gloss spar varnish. 3. Sanded, stained and applied 3 coats of spar varnish to the taff rail, which for some reason weathered worse than the rest of the bright work. 4. Sanded down to bare wood at one location on the cabin side (port), one location on the seat back (stbd), and several locations on the front face of the seat boxes where the storage openings are down at the cockpit floor. (Not convenient to run an r.o. sander OR a belt sander, but it's done and... Smoooooth....) 5. Finished fairing/filling the rudder, which had fiberglass weave showing through. 6. Used a drum attachment on the Dremel and took care of some sloppy original installation issues from 9 years ago on the lower rub rail. Followed up with restaining and varnish. 7. Fixed some ugly movement between bright work and the cabin sides, including restaining and 3 coats of spar varnish. 8. Routered the cabin lid edges with a 3/8 roundover bit and applied fiberglass, and faired and sanded (Wait for it...) "Smooooth...." 9. Oh yeah, and I bailed approximately 15 gallons of water from inside the boat after an unexpected overnight rain shower caught me with the tarp off the boat. Stupid rain.. > Whew! Are you still reading?? I've done more than I realized, until I listed it out. So there you have it. With two squids under the roof under the age of 6, accomplishing these tasks has been a bit lengthy at times. The three final tasks are to dress up the rudder box, which has always been a fiberglassing eyesore to me, paint the boat, and apply sealant at the bright work, perhaps with 5200. I'll post pix when this all gets done, because I think I'm going to have to have a little re-dedication ceremnoy.

Today I fiberglassed all of the checked areas except for one, and I also got ambitious and applied a third coat of varnish to the repaired wood. That's pretty decent for a day's work. Tomorrow I hit the one area that I didn't get glassed today, and I'll start sanding/fairing the other ones that got glass today.
