I'm also building my first SOF kayak (Mess About). I am building my strongback out of one piece of 4'x8' 1/2" birch ply. Not Baltic Birch. It is a box beam. The bottom is 6", The sides are 4" , and the top is whatever is left (approx 10") after saw kerfs. The top and bottom have shallow groves to help with alignment.The completed beam will be 16' long. The whole assembly is held together with screws. The reason that I'm mentioning this is that I plan to disassemble it when not in use. It will stack on end, using less than 1/2 sq ft of floor space, and each piece is no more than 8' long. If you are intrested in more details, let me know. Gary Minor

That helps. I would expect that straight grain and clear of knots should added to these desirable features. What woods are rot resistant, lightweight, bends easy, has straight grain, and is clear of knots? Perhaps there isn't an ideal wood, but what are your suggestions? Remember, we are ignoring availability and cost.

This is my first post. I have the second book, and plan to buy plans for either the 15' Mess About or the Cast Away. I've seen several suggestions for different wood used for stringers, but most of them are based on availability or cost. The question is.... ignoring availability and cost, what are the better or poorer choices of wood for stringers? I have some poplar. How suitable is it? Gary Minor, in Raleigh, NC
