Hello all

I am a new member. I have built a few boats and am interested the lapwing 16.

Does anyone have a materials list or an over-all materials cost for the lapwing? B@B does not seem to have one available.

Hi Herb,

It's true that a materials list hasn't been available up until now.  Now that several Lapwings are under construction and will be completed within the next year, I expect that the building community will soon be able to provide some good information on needed materials.

Let me tell you what I've used so far.  I bought (12) sheets of 4X8 1/4" marine ply.  If I don't make any big plywood mistakes, that will be sufficient, but barely.  An extra sheet or two would be an advisable precaution.  As for dimensional lumber, I've cut everything needed so far from ( 8 ) 2X6X10 Doug fir boards.  This amount of wood has enabled me to build a complete hull, bulkheads, some beams, the centerboard, and the rudder.  With the remaining unused plywood, I should be able to finish the interior, the benches, the centerboard trunk and the deck.  I purchased the aluminum tubing spec'ed for the masts and built the mast top sections from (3) 1X6X8 SYP boards.  I also purchased some mahogany and ash boards to build the tiller.

So, if you figure 12 - 14 sheets of ply, 12 - 14 2X6X10 boards of some suitable, local, marine-friendly lumber, and some specialty pieces and parts, you'll have a pretty close estimate.

Assuming you are the one who left a message on my phone today, I'm sure John gave you a better answer than I can anyway.  My boat was built mostly of materials I had on hand and I did not keep any records.

Glad to help.  I didn't mention epoxy and disposables.  So far, I've used just under 5 gallons of epoxy, several yards of cloth, a tiny bit of fiberglass tape and a zillion foam brushes.  The biggest cost there has been the epoxy.  I've spent almost $300 in epoxy and will need that much more again.  But, marine epoxy is the greatest invention known to mankind, so it's worth it.

If you decide to go ahead with a Lapwing build, please let us know.

I am comming up with aprox. $2500 for materials  with 13 sheets of 6mm okoume marine ply but not including shop disposables, masts, sails and rigging.

Does that sound like it is in the ball park?

That may even be a little on the high side, so you're probably okay with that.  It just depends on the cost of your Okoume and what you might have to pay in having it shipped.  So far, I think I've been failrly effective at controlling costs.  The big ticket items (sails, trailer, motor and marine ply) represent the lion's share of costs.  If you can get good deals on those, you've got it licked.

I did include $200 to $300 in that $2500 for masts. also plans($99) and $100 for misc shipping. I can get the okoume within a couple of hour drive at world panel products in NC.

Al Jurnigen and the others at World Panel are good people to deal with.  You do need to know yourself what you want and what you are being offered since they are not boatbuilders.  I bought the remains of a stack of occume from Al a couple years ago at a good price and  most of what went into Lapwing came from that.  They also have better quality fir than you may find at building and supply dealers.  He may also have any hardwoods that you want for trim.  You could mention my name to Al and I hope it will not get you run off the place.

I will mention your name. I have dealt with them before when i bought some okoume and a little mahogany for a couple of clc skerrys that I built about two years ago. they are good folks.
