where is the best place to put a self bailer?

I have a two person sailing dingy called a 'Sunburst' which I have bought Anderson Bailers for. I have read several post about installing them but none that I have seen mentions where is the best place for putting them in the hull.

How do I know that the place I install them will be the most efficient to drain the most water?

Is there a way to work out where the water will collect without putting the boat in the sea?

I have tried looking at other Sunbursts but they tend to be false floor models that do not need bailers because they drain out the back.

Reuben, toss a bucket of water into her and see where it collects.  Be sure the limber holes are open first and that she is level with her waterline on the trailer.  8) 8)

thanks for that. How would I find out where the water line is? The boat is unpainted and unfinished so I don't want to actually stick it in the sea.

You also want the bailer to be in a spot that is protected from tromping feet.  This is for protection of both feet and bailer.  The best spot I have found for all reasons is alongside the CB or DB trunk near it's aft end.  If there is a thwart in this area like most of Graham's boats, so much the better.  I've been putting bailers there for over 40 years and have found no better spot.  On the cat ketches, this will be alongside the mizzen mast.  On Spindrifts, it will be alongside the DB.

Thanks for that info. I have decided to put the bailers where the water collects which is a bit aft of the centrecase but I am going to put in a traveller (because when I am the mainsail trimmer in coastal racing I can't see the twist of the main and want to learn about it ???) which will sit above the bailers and protect them (hopefully).

Right, now I have some photos up of my boat rather than someone elses. That one was a false floor model which drains out holes in the back but is very punishing on the knees. Mine is a side seat model and needs the bailers because the bottom of the boat is below the water line.
