Kitchen cove ??????????????

The slot between the rudder-box and the transom stock is supposed to be covered by vinyl sheeting of some sort, called kitchen cove in the plans.

I come up with only blank stares and similar strange looks when asking around for this stuff. May be I asked in the wrong places?

Anyone who knows specifically where to find suitable vinyl sheeting?

I should have it yesterday, of course!

Usually known in hardware stores as vinyl base cove, found in most hardware stores with sheet vinyl goods. Comes in strips 3-4' long or in rolls.

I am considering using a piece of neoprene instead.

Any Lowes or Home Depot will have it. You could also look at pond liner material if you can find it thick enough.

Jake, you may have a point, it may not be stout enough. I was thinking of a piece with a thickness of about 1/8", but it could be a little flimsy still.

I'd like to find material that I can "cut to fit" so it looks more original or suited to the purpose than would base cove.

As one of our "masters of mods", have you been considering something other than base cove?

Actually, all I have considered, and I have pondered this for a while, is the base molding. I figured I would cut off the 'curved' portion of hte moulding though.

Thing is, it has to be stout enough not to buckle into the slot while still being flexible enough to allow the rudder box to travel easily too.

Neoprene? are you referring to neoprene gasket material? Or maybe a thick (1/8-3/32") rubber mat?? That might work, though it will leave black marks all over whatever it hits..

Hmmm, another point to ponder as my painter is sick today... bummer!! Maybe tommorrow..

The cove base molding is about the best product to cover the gap between stern block and the rudder, it comes in many different colors and is just flexible enough to cover the gap and it is cheap. I think we cut off the curved part of the molding, then used screws with fender washers to fasten to the stern block.

It just sounds ugly, if you get the right color, you won't even notice it once it is installed.

Well, no wonder it was difficult to find when the only words used in the plans were kitchen and cove besides vinyl, while the words base and moulding were more important. With the descriptions received I found it on roll at first try (Ace Hardware) and it is already installed for the Friday morning launch exercise. Thanks!

I never bothered with the rudder gills, The boat doesn't seem to suffer from the ommission.

As I figured at best 3-4 inches of the rudder box is submerged under water. Not all that much to be exposed to turbulent water flow in my estimation.

My boat seems to tack just fine.
