rudder fairing flap

CG II's previous builder installed the rudder box with a pintle and gudgeon set up. Looks great and strong as Babe the Blue Ox .(My daughter lives in MN, so I get to say things like that...) However. it does make the installation of the fairing flap or gasket or whatever it should be called across the gap between the keel extension and the rudder box a bit problematic, since the mounting bolts and brackets mean that their sides are no longer smooth and flush.

How important is that flap?

I won't argue vociferously in their favor but I installed them this year after two previous seasons with out. I did notice an improvement with the flaps.

I expect Ray must have kept his trim figure since he doesn't see much his rudder box in the water. In my case, my youthful metabolism must have failed or I got some bad recessive gene because I see about 2 or 3 inches in the the water.

I used garage door weatherstrip because it was what I could find. It's too narrow to span the gap in one piece so I have one piece on the rudder box and one on the keel.
