Craig Bursell Posted February 18, 2005 Posted February 18, 2005 The water is still frozen around here in Minnesota, so I am working on my Vacationer rudder. It is not clear from the plans if the rudder angles aft or forward. One diagram shows the pull up cord hole angling the rudder forward the other aft. Why not make it a straight tapering hydrofoil? Barry Pyeatt Posted February 18, 2005 Posted February 18, 2005 Craig, The straight edge of the rudder is the trailing edge and vertical in use. The forward edge of the rudder is angled back to the bottom edge. If you were to bring the trailing edge to a taper and the forward edge to a semi rounded foil shape then it begins to approximate an airfoil on edge. It is quite efficient in this position. If reversed, the rudder looses efficiency and effectiveness. It will also get heavier to the hand as both speed and pressure builds on it. Hope this helps. Stay warm, soft water isn't that far off.
