Johannah Posted March 27, 2004 Posted March 27, 2004 Barry et al, do you have any ideas about how to attach the additional blocking that is part of these steering mods? We need to tighten up the steering, add better turnbuckles and line so maybe it makes more sense to just improve the whole rig but since we didn't assemble the boat, I don't easily picture how the blocks would be secured. Ron Huff built the transom with a nice curve for authenticity, just to add to the variables. Quote
Barry Pyeatt Posted March 27, 2004 Posted March 27, 2004 I cut a length of 2X4 to fit between the lazerette and the transom on either side and then glued/screwed it to the deck, transom and lazerette. It was spaced approx. 1 1/2" from the hull side panels so that I could get a lock nut on the eye bolt that ran thru the 2X4. That allowed me to attach the fittings to the 2X4 for the steering gear. I cut a bevel on the top edge to conform to the curve of the deck so that the 2X4 was vertical on edge. T. Nelson put the 2X4 pieces flat against the deck for his mounts as can be seen clearly in his photo of the lazerette with the side panel off. I placed mine vertically on edge. Either way would work. It still left me room on the deck for two 6" access plates, (one on either side) to get into the area when adjustments were needed. The 2X4 also serves as a very solid base for two additional items. The cleats on either side at the stern and the base for the traveler rod for my boom. Don't think I have any photos of the installation from inside the lazerette. But those corners are very solid. 8) Quote
