tomstock Posted October 12, 2003 Posted October 12, 2003 I'm planning to soak some epoxy into the tiny gaps between the keel and hull bottom on my weekender. I figure while I'm at it, I could use the epoxy to create a nice fillet along the keel. Anyone know if Home Depot carries epoxy in large enough quantities to do this? What about something to thicken it up? West Marine wants $70 per gallon!!! Ouch! I considered wood filler or fiberglass resin for the fillet, but I dont think either one will be strong enough to hold up to abuse (epoxy isn't as brittle). Tom Quote
aeaton Posted October 13, 2003 Posted October 13, 2003 You might want to fill the area with wood first. Cut a triangle from 3/4 stock, and glue where the keel meets the bottom from bow to stern. Then use epoxy thickened to complete the rest. You can save a lot of money doing it this way. I know a number of builders have done this. Home Depot only has polyester as far as I know. Quote

ken connors Posted October 14, 2003 Posted October 14, 2003 thats a lot of epoxy. i glued in some cheap cove moulding from home cheapo and went over it with epoxy. i used a plastic putty knife rounded off to fit the fillet over the moulding. quick, cheap and strong. how much abuse is that area really gonna get anyway? the keel wiil bounce off most things before it gets in there.
