Guest Florin Posted June 10, 2003 Posted June 10, 2003 While picking up the spar lumber yesterday we wanted to get the clubfoot wood too. They didn't have 1 1/2 x 2 1/2 oval handrail stock... but I bought 1 1/2 hemlock doweling. Do you think there's anything wrong with that? Thanks Florin Quote
T. Nelson Surbrook Posted June 10, 2003 Posted June 10, 2003 Well if you ask me what is wrong with that I have a good answer. The clubfoot concept is what is wrong with it. I used the clubfoot for a while and was not happy with the shape of the jib. I removed the clubfoot and went to the two jib sheet setup and then to larger jibs and at this time I am using a huge genoa with a roller/furler. I am pleased with the control and ballance afforded me by the current setup I am using. Sorry if I sound a little harsh, I don't mean to. Boating is a journey for me and I am still on the road. Quote

During the first voyages we'll be too busy taking out the kinks out of the system, so the least amount of things we have to do the better. Johannah Posted June 10, 2003 Posted June 10, 2003 Florin, if you end up giving the cutter rig a try, with its 2 staysails, you might want to use a jib boom (longer than the wretched club foot) on one for ease of handling. You'll see that set-up on lots of old boats. I, too, took off the club foot, but would consider using a jib boom in the future. I think the Stevenson's chose the shorter club because they were trying to make most parts from easily found stuff and that was the length of some common wooden handled implement. A jib boom runs the full length of the jib foot and is usually laced on. No harder to make than the club. Quote
Mike Pennington Posted June 11, 2003 Posted June 11, 2003 I am using plain old closet dowels. I have the option of going with the club or two jib lines. I have completed my new Genoa, for this weekends little trailer sail to Big Lake, 300 miles one way. Going to meet the Loon and her crew for a sail off. I will be sailing Nancy Lake, Monday, then back to Fairbanks to do Harding Lake. Refit Refit! Gets better every day. The tree wasps are trying to move in the Vacationer, but I've been keeping up the good fight. 8) I did make an 8 foot pole for the Genoa, a plastic boat pulled one out on me last time out and almost got away. Now the Wolf has a new trick! The 8 inch foam bed is the cats meow, so nice. Dominates the cabin but I don't care. Camping sure gets better. Long way to go yet, Thank you Lord, what would I do if there were no boats to play with? Quote
Florin {VACATIONER} Posted June 13, 2003 Posted June 13, 2003 Yeah, mine looks like a closet rod as well. It's a 1.5" hemlock round stock 7' long. I figured I can try that, and if it breaks I'll just replace it with something heavier, but I think it'll be ok for now, hopefully until we decide to go with jib sheets. We'll probably change to sheets anyway by next season. I just wanna get her wet now real baaad. Thanks Quote
