Does anyone have any good ideas for attatching hiking straps to the spindrift 10?

Spindrift 526 "Kalakai" went on her maiden voyage this past weekend! We took her up to Lake Tahoe from her home in Santa Cruz, Ca and had a beautiful day of light winds. Being a beggining sailor I was a little nervous but quickly realized how easy the boat was to handle. We took "rides" with the kids and other family members all day. What a blast! I couldn't be happier with the final product of a very rewarding building process. Many thanks to Graham for all of his help along the way. I was very impressed by his patience and knowledge. The phone calls were never rushed and he answered all of my questions thoroughly. Thanks also to Messing About and it's members for all of the great advice. This boat took nearly two years of very part time work to complete. I've include some pictures and can't wait to get out there again. As we say in California, I am STOKED! Scott

Does anyone have a good idea for covering boat trailer bunk pads so they do not rub through the bottom paint? I just finished my Spindrift 10 and after trailering it on a towel padded bunk had major abrasions through the paint. I think carpet would also sand throught the finish. The trailer is a hand-me-down and home made. The bunks are made of 2x6 boards. Would foam pipe insulation work? I am very happy with the spindrift. What a fun boat to sail. We had a wonderful weekend at Lake Tahoe for the maiden voyage. I will post pictures later. Thanks, Scott

Thank you for the very thorough answer. I am nearing completion and will post pictures in a few weeks. This has been a great project and I have really enjoyed the process. I am very excited to get her in the water. By the way, today we have an 18 foot gray whale in the Santa Cruz Harbor eating anchovies!

Ready for a stupid question? Does the bungee cord attatched to the centerboard trunk seen in the pictures on the companion CD hold the centerboard in a retracted position? I can't seem to find any diagram on the plans for this. How does it work? Thanks for enlightening a wannabe sailor.

I am about to wrap the gooseneck onto the mast of my spindrift 10 but I'm little confused as to it's location. The rigging and sail plan page shows the mast to be 16'9". Does that length include the mast plug? I understand the top of the boom should be 13'10" from the top of the mast but I need to be sure of the true mast length. Also, how do I mount the clam cleat for the clew strap on the aluminum mast? Thanks in advance for any help on this.

Thanks for the replies. I guess my question now is with grossly 40 percent of the glass tape disrupted throughout the boat what options do I have? All of the seams are faired and I am ready to epoxy coat. Thanks, Scott

I am building a Spindrift 10. I just finished reading some of the posts on sanding and fairing the edges of the taped seams and feel like I really screwed up. While in the process of sanding the tape edges I have cut into the fibers of the glass. In some spots a good amount of glass fibers were disrupted. I should have researched this process better and now am wondering how badly I have hurt the integrity of the joints. Does anyone have any ideas on how I might be able to improve my situation? I would hate to have to re tape the seams!! Will the infrastructure provide enough strength? Thanks, Scott

Is it important to epoxy coat the boat before filling and fairing? Also, does anyone have experience with System Three LPU top coat paints? Thanks for your help, Scott

Hello, I am new to this forum and near completion of a spindrift 10. I am now making the keel and boom and wondering if I can use vertical grain clear fir. I would like to put a stainless steel band on the keel for protection. I don't have any long pieces of ash but could get some if fir is too soft for the keel. I'm also having trouble finding the band for the keel. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks, Scott H.
