    FINALLY DONE!!!

Thanks Jake - I would love to see us get a get-toether together...... if the sun would ever come out for a little while - or even if the rain up here would just subside for a few hours. BTW, I didi send Derek a few of the pics jsut to make him druel a little, providing he is not in too deep with the chopper making thing. Ken

    FINALLY DONE!!!

Greg:It is a weekender Stump: I made the oar which was patterned after an oriental "Yuloh" - a 10 footer - just have to figure how to transport it when on the road. Found a great piece of old growth fir that had about 18 rings/inch - nice and straight and I cut it so it has a wow in it. Jan: The sails are polytarp from Dave Gray - and would highly recommend them ( if you take recommendations from someone about sails that he hasn't even used yet). But a great guy, complete kits and easy directions. I'll be working throughout the week so maybe a little water closer to the weekend - I would rather have the maiden voyage with water below the boat rather than coming down from above, but in the PNW that may not be a reality. FINALLY DONE!!!

Well, I guess I'll soon find out if I am really a small-boat sailor or if I just like woodworking. I had a great Sunday afternoon sailing it in the back yard on the trailer - no turtles! Now just to get it in the water for the inaugural christening! A few small details like naming the silly thing, and also getting it registered etc. but other than that we're ready! I'll let you all know how it goes on the initial voyage on the high seas- if I dare! Ken [attachment over 4 years old deleted by admin]
  4. Great pics Jake - now to get the motivation to open the box of sails and start the process. I just returned from a week in the San Juans - without my weekender - which I was hoping to have done by then but..... Anyway, thanks to everyone who posted here about the reef points etc. I'll let you know how they all turn out. Ken
  5. Now THAT'S more like it ! Thanks so much for the response, Barry. Thank you for sharing that with me as I am close to opening the Polysail box within a week. I wanted to put in the reefpoints initially and not add them later. Appreciate all the detail you provided in you post. I also want you to know I really appreciate you taking your time to respond in that detail .... much, much thanks, Ken
  6. Jan, The trailer was an EZ Loader, model EZ 14-17 1250. They are manufactured up here in Spokane WA so they may very well be available down by you as well. It was sturdier and more heavily constructed than I first thought as well, so that was a pleasant surprise. Ken
  7. Ok, Barry.............but I'm not an engineer nor do I have the formulas for figuring out the sf of the sails and where that may put my reef points.... I'm either not that bright (most likely  ) or just plain lazy. So as not to have to reinvent this 'wheel' I was hoping for a measurement form the foor of the mainsail. But if worse comes to worse................. guess I'll have to get out the old geometry book for reference.....
  8. Thanks Jake, I think I would relate to using only a single reef too. Anything more than single reef and one should really be ashore, at the window of the marina bar, with a second or third drink in hand.
  9. I'm holding my breath - but not to rush you. When you get to it would be great! Ken
  10. All, Well, I'm almost to the point of popping open my polysail kit box that has been patiently waiting in the corner of my shop for the past couple of months. Can some of you please share what the location of the reef points are for a weekender? First point = ?? inches above the foot.......Second reef point = ??? above the foot. Also how many grommets have you installed for each of the points... three across? 4? 5? I would assume the second would have fewer. Any advice/input would sure be appreciated. Thanks, Ken
  11. Thanks to all of you that respond to my postings asking for input on various things. I don't always post back, but want you all to know I sure do appreciate it. I have been working quite dilignetly on the little red boat and am posting a few pics of my progress. Also there was a post a while back on trailers - I will also post a pic of the one I picked up. I bought a E-Z Loader form Olympic Boats here in Bellingham and was pleased - designed for 14-17" boats - weight limit of 1250 and 19" overall length. I was also pleased that after looking for a used trailer I decided to spend almost what others were wanting for their used ones - $659 + tax & license. More than I wanted to spend but a much better trailer than I would have been able to find used. For another $15 I picked up two 12" bunk extenders which finished off the bunks just right. I also followed the advice of many of you and added the center guide for centering when loading the boat. My remaining tasks are to attach the standing and running rigging, make the poly sails (now a loose footed main as per the conversations here) and get it out in the water, hopefully the first of Sept. - just in time for the fall breezes out in the San Juan Islands. One note in that I was very pleased with how the companionway hatch worked out - I will also include a pic of that design as well. Also a pic of the dolly I picked up - or should I call it the "backsaver" - worth every penny when moving it around!!! Thanks again, Ken [attachment over 4 years old deleted by admin]
  12. All, Back in Nov. of 2003 Finton posted: I am considering this as an option opposed to motor power too. Finton, I'm wondering if you ever did this and if you still are? And.... anybody else sculling out there? Thanks, Ken

    Progress update

John, That's my Sunday afternoon paint job - the navy paint was specially tinted for me at the local paint shop using deck and porch paint. THan just added the grit (also form the paint store) and rolled on the first coat - waited 20 minutes and added the second coat. Not counting the original taping of the areas to be painted, I was done and cleaned up and tape pulled off within an hour. I like quick progress!!! Ken I added another pic showing the grit in the paint - really easy!!! [attachment over 4 years old deleted by admin]

    Progress update

All, Been putting more time in on the boat after getting back from vacation and not so much here in this forum. So thought I would post a couple pictures of my progress. I have pretty much finished the painting and am presently working on my rudder box, rudder and tiller. Will soon be finished with that and will install the stainless for the standing rigging and then move on to figuring out my preferences for halyards, sheets and extra lines. More to follow as I make progress. It is becoming more and more enjoyable as I am nearing the end, to be able to put the finishing touches to the boat in the different areas - feels like one is really making progress.... finally. Ken Still no name for the old girl......... [attachment over 4 years old deleted by admin]
  15. Oh Jake, Rolling something on - you always have the good ideas - but alas.... just a little late for me - I already attached the strips on the keel bottom. Here's the pic I promised Jan - if not already viewed in a different post: [attachment over 4 years old deleted by admin]
