Paul J Posted January 24, 2003 Posted January 24, 2003 Gordy, The boat looks good and has a lot put in it as to room and function. Of course the rig is great. I can see why you would like this as to type of sailing you do and the area you sail in. This would be a great boat for hanging out with the bunch that sails on the west coast there at places like Cedar Key and the like. Has true shoal draft which is a huge bonus. Makes the boat beachable for your shallow water sailing. The cabin with two berths and a porta potti and a small place for a galley. It will make overnighting or longer much more comfortable. The only thing I see that I would even think about changing is the cockpit coaming. I like to be able to rail sit if I need or want to, so that maybe one change. But that's just me, others may really like the coaming. I have a question for you here. Is there any ballast going to be put into the center board or is it all going to be in the cabin. Paul J Quote

For me at 18 feet it's just a little small. I am still looking at something in the 26 foot or larger size. It looks like a real fun project. Quote
Gordy Hill Posted January 24, 2003 Author Posted January 24, 2003 Paul, In order to have a self-draining cockpit (and to see over the cabin) the cockpit sole is raised. The seats are that little line just below the deck line. I guess you could say there is no rail. I agree with you, I like to sit on the rail, but this boat will be ballasted and it's noticably beamier than the CS17. The ballast is in the centerboard, and the bilge keel will be solid lead to counter balance the ofset weight of the centerboard and to keep the weight as low as possible. I haven't discussed it with Graham yet, but I may use solid 1x1 steel for the keel. Should give me more weight as low as possible and be pretty indistructable. "Steel Keel" "Steel Keel O'Neil" ....maybe not. Nelson, I assume you've checked out the "Princess". I saw Chick's when I was in N.C. a couple years ago. I was really impressed, and if I had room I'd build one. This 18 will use up all my available space for building and storage. The 26 footer is on the boards. Just to give Graham something to do, I'd imagine the Princess could be configured with the Belhaven keel system. I'm just rambling, I get the impression shoal draft isn't as much as a requirement for you. Gordy Quote
Joe Nelson CS#35 Posted February 4, 2003 Posted February 4, 2003 I personally dont care for weighting a centerboard. I know it gets the weight down lower but it can be dangerous when in sharp seas. Banging can tear it loose from the boat. But I am a west coaster. What applies here may not be pertainant in Florida. I would prefer the ballist to be stationary. Joe Quote
