beginners sailing book

The best book is a good sailor that can take you out and offer some basic instructions. Most folks are very tactile and holding a sheet or halyard, works in the brain a lot better, than all the diagrams and text in the world. The act of sailing is also fairly intuitive too, the boat heels, you naturally lean the other way, etc., so learning is much faster and usually much easier, if you just get on a boat with an experienced skipper. All this said, you'd do well to read up on some of the theory behind it, familiarize yourself with the fundamentals, so when the "ride" does come, you're not totally lost. I'm pretty sure there's a "Sailing for Dummies" book available and it'll get it done. All this aside, getting good at sailing takes lots of practice, lots of butt on rail time and getting crushed on the race course. Sailing as crew at the local sailing club, is the fastest way to get real experience and you'll learn how to be a ruthless bastard too.
