Drew
I am interested to know what you guys who have completed pre-cut CS 20 and CS 17 mk3 hulls have done regarding builders notes. The notes available through Graham's website are not yet complete. Have you just followed your nose and pressed on or have you made lots of phone calls? There are a few points I wouldn't mind knowing more about as I get all the materials ready for assembly.
Doug Cameron
I had previously built a CS 20 MK 1 from plans. That helped. I also spent 4 weeks at Graham's shop assembling the boat enough to put it on a trailer and take it home. By then, I wasn't going to box myself out of something by closing in a space before I had done all the work there. Only in putting on the motor mount (see my wife's funny video) did I not do something in a reasonable order. So, the answer is by luck and pluck did I get around not having builders notes. I did have to call Graham several times and I did ask for detailed drawings for things like the masts and rudder .
Chick Ludwig
Drew. I also have built several boats previous to the CS-17 Mk-3. I find the plans and building notes adequate, but have needed to call G. or Alan for a couple of things. It also helped to have a kit to start with. Have you built anything from B&B plans before? If not, you might try something smaller like a dinghy or canoe to get used to their building methods.
Steve W
I built a Spindrift 11N from scratch and I am now building from a kit. To be honest, I've built balsa airplanes that were more complicated, but just used less glue :^) The building notes aren't complete, but there is enough there to keep you going, and B & B is always responsive, and so is this group. I think it helps that we all used kits and that you aren't makes things more difficult, but they say if it was easy, everybody would be doing it! I wouldn't get discouraged, get a good way to post pictures and ask away. I deal with software developers on your side of the world and I always love that when I post a question at the end of my day, there is a response waiting n the morning. The luxury of time zone change.
Jknight611
Drew, I second, well I guess it is forth their opinions, my CS20.3 sn2 was essentially complete before the building manual was available. I had the advantage of the kit, but as Steve said, not too complicated. When I got my pile of plywood home I thought what a pile, but as I started it went amazingly fast. It is the Dragonfly of the sailboat world! Fast and efficient! Great group here with a LOT of experience.
Drew
Well thanks guys. Your comments are encouraging. Too late Chick, I now have a garage full of cut parts for my CS20#3. I have found the plans and support material very straightforward so far and am enjoying doing a bit more marking out and cutting each week. I now have all the components for the cockpit module cut and trial fitted, but back in pieces to give me room for the hull. I am about to scarf the hull bottom and sides and glue the longerons in place. I reckon that within a fortnight I will have the bow joined and the sides wired and ready to assemble into a hull. Having been around boats and ships much of my life, and having built a few odd things, I am confident, but don't want to have closed in a space and suddenly realise I should have built a bulkhead or whatever first . I look forward to staying in touch and will post some photos, if I can figure out how to make them stay upright. Cheers
Designer
As I progress with Carlita I have a number of things to contribute to this string. I have not gotten as much done on Carlita lately but I have an opportunity right now or I could spend my time here. I have made my decision, I am off to work.
Jknight611
Drew, you are at the cusp of having a thing that can be identified as a boat. We went from a pile of wood to a boat shaped thing in 4 minutes! Steve, quit playing on the Internet, go work on your boat.
