Rich D
I'll be glueing up some boards soon using my tablesaw scarfing jig to cut the scarfs. Should the scarfs be on the face of the board or on the edge? Is one way stronger than the other? This will be 3/4" x 1 1/2" stock and 3/4" x 3/4" stock. Whoops - sorry for the double post - I thought I was 'editing'
PAR
It depends is the answer. On highly loaded scarfs, I like to have the glue line perpendicular to the load or bend, as this tends to prevent the scarf from opening up. On decorative stuff, I like to see it, so will rotate the scarf 90 degrees, so the diagonal line can be seen. In most cases, particularly on feather edge scarfs, I try to hide the usually less than perfect feather edge, which usually places it on the narrowest side of the piece. There's also a gluing surface area issue that needs to be considered.
