Chick Ludwig
UNUSUAL BOAT PROJECT. My husband, a fine cabinetmaker and furniture maker, died 5 years ago. He left behind a handmade sailboat, I estimate over half done. The plans describe it as a 22-ft sailing dory, and have Capt. Jim Orrell’s name on them. Apparently, while he kept to the plan building the hull, and the rigging setup is traditional, he put a clipper bow on the boat. I do have the lead keel. I would appreciate any information or advice from boat guys on what to do with it. I’m not sure I can sell a half-completed boat, but it’s just too beautiful to live in the garage. I live in Boone, in western NC. (thanks for the help in posting pix -- completely obvious ... )
PAR
It's often very difficult to move a partly completed boat, unless the builder is one of some note and/or the design particularly desirable. Character boats especially are difficult to find interested buyers for, simply because the market is very small. For example, if this was an 18' center console, with an outboard, you'd have a much easier time, because these are what everyone seems to want.In most situations like this, recovery of the materials costs is considered a win, unfortunately. Exposure, availability to a market (typically near a shore or big bunch of puddles) where folks can get an in person look, especially a trailer, so it can be hauled off, etc. are things that can help. Also more pictures, possibly some of the plans so folks can look up what it is, etc. These things will improve your chances. I'll assume this is the same Orrell 22 on Crag's List? I'm reasonably sure Dynamite Payson is now selling many of the Orrell plans.
