CS in the EC

The new CS 20 MK III performed flawlessly.  It was dry and stable and comfortable.  We left the beach with one reef in each sail.  We were not challenged across Tampa Bay.  In the steep chop off Anna Maria (~4 foot), a way over-canvassed i550 pitch-poled 150 yards in front of us (he was flying a code zero and an unreefed fat topped main).  After turning the corner at Anna Maria, we were in the lee of the land about a mile off shore in one foot seas.  We shook out the reefs and had our fastest sail ever to Stump Pass (arriving at ~3:45).  Michael, exhausted from a business trip, even slept 2 1/2 hours.  After all the fuss and disappointment from the cancellation, we sailed back to my truck at Ft. DeSoto.

The cover of the bolt for the centerboard did leak a few gallons, and I will be consulting with Graham about better caulk.

Thanks for the report Doug. I am sorry for all of you the event was cancelled. I was planning on going to CP1 saturday evening, but when the event was cancelled, I decided to just hang with my Dad. It was so strange because it just seemed like a perfect day for sailing small boats. I hope you took pictures and video!

Take Care,

Steve

Nice to hear that all were safe, and that the CS series performed as expected.  Doug, did you use polysulphide caulk for the covers? would love to know what compound led to the leakage.

Just to add some documentation for consideration as some folks on the other boards have been critical of the Coasties decision to intervene.  Two statutes, probably more (one state, one federal) apply to these events such as this one.

Interesting to note that the Federal one comes under Homeland Security.

For those interested here are links to most of the stuff I have read so far about the EC 2015. Lots of descriptions of conditions but I subscribe to the theory that the CG's request to stop the event (I believe that's all they had the authority to do) had more to do with the number of small boats on the water and the fact that the watertribe mapper which usually shows all challengers on one mapping page was not working due to technical difficulties. Thus, it was difficult to keep track of all challengers positions. Whether or not that is even important for race management in a self proclaimed "unsupported event" is also another discussion. Just a few years ago we didn't have the tech available to the average boater. Anyway, here are some links.

Watertribe Forums: Where lots of helpful suggestions have been floated by tribers about how to improve.  The event founder and head poobah is even now in talks with the CG on how to cooperate more going forward.

And if your more into bar fights there is the SA thread on the 2015 EC. Although toward the end things have more or less settled down and turned into constructive criticism...mostly. Warning, it's a long read with lots of stuff not worth reading interspersed with interesting perspectives...for sailors...kind of.

Drone Footage of the race from a local hobbyist.

Also, an article about how the guy who used a drone to film the start of the race (A GREAT VIDEO) was contacted by the FAA claiming that he was doing it for commercial purposes which they deemed illegal.

Caulk - I use Life Caulk on bare epoxy with three screws to secure the plate. I'll tak it apart when I g home to figure out what happened.

Ballast - we were very stable with one reef in each sail and thus saw no reason for ballast. We would have had to open the tank after launching and would be half way across the Bay before it filled. As it was, we shook out our reefs after leaving the Bay and never felt overpowered. The Mark III has a larger main than the Mark I (the mizzen was moved aft to accommodate rowing and the weighted centerboard and the water ballast allow for more canvas), so adjustments in the Main were the key in the shifting winds on the way back. We did add water ballast Sunday morning when beating against the very shifty winds as it turned to SE. And we dumped it (using the Andersen bailer) on the broad reach back North.

Will second the motion on Life Caulk polysulphide sealant.  I have used it many times and it works.  You can dismantle the parts with a sharp blade later if needed.

After reading all the EC and Ultramarathon reports, have been taking great pains to get my hatches tight on the CS 17.  Gaskets going on once it warms up.
