txruckus
I was wondering if any one has started a tangerine canoe build. I have built and sold two traditional style Greenland kayaks and I think I would like to try my hand at a Kudzu style SOF canoe next. I would normally be paddling the rivers and bays around Corpus Christi TX and want to be able to take my son along for a little fishing and exploring now and then. Is there a Tangerine No 1 out there somewhere?
P Doug (WA)
Welcome aboard, txrukus. To my knowledge no one that posts here has built one. Sure would like to watch one being built, via pictures and writing.
Kudzu
Mike, that manages the boat database on Duck Works Magazine web site, built one. You can get his email him from the web site. I can't remember the details of his build but he made some choices I questioned. I don't ever criticize people's choices and I am not doing that now. I just remember that his Tangerine came out really heavy. He launched the boat and I never heard anything else about it. That left me with the impression that he wasn't happy with it. Of course I don't know, I am just guessing. But I would suggest you drop him an email. If there are problems with the design I would like to know. I am just not into canoes so I really have no desire to build one for myself.
txruckus
Thanks for the information! I'll point the compass twords duckbworks (love that site) and see what I can drag up. No matter what model I decide to build you can guarantee it will show up here!
Kudzu
Drop mike an email and pick his brain. I have sold a few sets of plans but I rarely hear back so I don't know if any others have been built.
MadBoat
Building a Tangerine now, not a lot of info on past builds out there, if there are please let me know. Will keep updated as progress happens. Will be using a combination of woods to achieve greater strength such as old growth maple (reclaimed) and reclaimed Douglas fir from a turn of the century barn. Cheers.
Hirilonde
It is going to be a heavy boat with those woods. But if you think added strength will be worth it. The skin is the weak part, not that it is particularly weak. I can't see any advantage to the Maple. Douglas Fir isn't that much heavier than WRC, well, not as much as the Maple. Kudzu
Agreed! The 'selling point' of SOF is its lightweight. By deviating from the design your just adding weight with no practical advantage. Canoes are heavy by SOF standards to start with.
MadBoat
Noted that the weight increase will be a factor, using the wood I have on hand as it is free and readily available. The other consideration is that the rivers here in southern Alberta tend to have a good deal of white water. As I plan to do extended tripping, I think the safety factor outweighs the weight consideration. Goon note on the skin, thank you, I will be ordering it soon from KUDZU. Recommendations on what weight would work best?
Kudzu
5 hours ago, MadBoat said: The other consideration is that the rivers here in southern Alberta tend to have a good deal of white water. Then you looking at a the wrong style of boat. SOF are not suitable for white water. You need to be looking at something else. I NEVER recommend SOF boats for white water. That is a recipe for disaster.
Hirilonde
Most don't even use fiberglass for white water. When I was 18 I wrapped an aluminum canoe around a rock on the Saco River in Maine. Serious canoeists mostly use Kevlar composites for white water.
MadBoat
Yes, Completely agree, I have dedicated rodeo boat for class 2 and above, mainly have to deal with 30 cm and below that come up unexpectedly. Just wondering what your lengths were on the stingers?
Kudzu
Buddy of mine wrapped my dads fiberglass canoe around a rock on the one class 2 rapid on a creek we paddled. Fortunately they were swimming and not in the canoe or it could have turned out much worse. But the skin on the SOF will rub through very quickly. I have tried it and if you are bumping bottom in current, you are going to have to reskin VERY quickly. Sliding over a down trees is much different that being pushed by a current over rocks. MadBoat
Noted, will be posting some pictures shortly. Making a living gets in the way of boat building!
MadBoat
Just a note, the bow and stern patterns appear to be 2" to short. fitted up the gunwales and the curvature dictated by them appears to need another 2" in height. has any one else seen this? or have a suggestion as to what may be the cause? Thanks.
Hirilonde
Pictures make questions like this so much more clear.

Thanks. Hi MadBoat, did you figure that out? I am also interested in building a tangerine, but i can't find any pictures of builds online.
