JReed
Looks great. I take it its a 12 footer?
Kudzu
Yes, it is 12 foot. Steve, looks great! I like the coaming and low back deck. Of course I am wondering if I went a little too low with the back deck. But I wanted it to look like a little Shad and it does. I am kind of excited! woodman
Extra bracing for the center stringers while trimming the chine stringers at the stern and bow... Mark the chine stringer to cut off the excess... I use a jig to support my had saw to make the cuts...Align the surface to the centerline and to where the jig is just making contact on the backside of the stringer... Clamp a support block to the bottom...And a pc. of 1/4'' ply to the top which is the support for the hand saw...
Kudzu
I have to look at this closer. I might have to make a couple of these for the students to use. Looks like it would sure make it easier on them (AND ME!)
mitchmellow
My gosh! I just used my calibrated eyeball!
woodman
I precut the chine stringer and took it off...Then I worked on the gunwall got the stern cut to fit and worked toward the bow...I Noticed after the frame in front of the cockpit the stringer didn't want to naturally meet up with the next frame..... So pushing it down I noticed the frames toward the back would lift which would cause the rocker in the keel to decrease...... Just a heads up that when lashing these together save the gunwall till last because all the other stringers even the ones on the deck lock the frames in on these Greenland style kayaks the gunwalls really try to lift up and distort the keel....... The chine stringer lashed and the gunwall now doesn't distort the keel when set in place.....
woodman
Well this is the first time I have done plywood coaming rings....I take it the first one gets lashed down...but it is so flexible I think the fabric is going to put quite a bow in it...I have really not taken much time investigating this application... woodman
Researched it and It needs side brackets....I'l make 2 of these out of some 1/2'' and lash them in.....
Kudzu
What I do is just leave is sew up one end of the boat. Insert the lower ring and then sew the other end. I leave it loose but you could temporarily lash it in place. With the skin on I then add the rest of the coaming rings. Once screwed together the coaming gets very rigid. Since I didn't put a skirt lip on this one it won't be as stiff but it is also smaller. Didn't plan on the side brackets but with kids, it's probably a good idea.
