Hi All,

 

New to this forum and unable to find what I was looking for by searching so thought a new topic.  If this is the wrong location I apologize in advance. 

 

Recently bought home a PBK 15 that needs to be recovered.  The old canvas (and lots of tacks) has been removed and I am doing a little frame repair.  Next will be recovering and deciding on one is difficult.  If going with a nylon what choices of waterproofing are available to me?  I hear most paints do not stick to Nylon like they do with a polyester fabric.

I don't think it is ever wrong to post stuff in this section of the forum, and it is always good to start your own thread for your own project.  Even though this is not a Kudzu design, it is probably the people who post there that you want to get involved, and especially Jeff who designs SoF kayaks and supplies materials for building and renovating.  He also supplies polyester and nylon material for skinning.

In my search for both proper tools and long pieces of wood for one of Jeff's boats I came across this old canoe/kayak full of holes.  The wood for the most part is 98% intact and thought I would have to buy skin if building from scratch but this way I can just fix a piece and not have to worry about finding wood or a means to cut and shape it.  After I skin this and get a good idea of what I am looking for I hope to some day still build from scratch.  A friend tried to show me how he scarfs with a belt sander and made it look rather simple but he also has a shop full of tools to rip, slice, shape and you name it.  My circular saw might not be up to the challenge in my unsilled hands.  I did ask Jeff if he offered his kits with wood besided just the bracing but understand that is probably not very cost effective unless you are able to sell many kits a week.

Very funny I am currently recovering my Planford Bell Kayak also. I went back with the canvas.
