compncards Posted March 4, 2012 Report Share Posted March 4, 2012 Hi. Got a question for you folks here. In a recent auction I got what looks like either part of a porthole or a window from a boat. Its brass about 10 inches in diameter, good glass but instead of a door like portholes, it looks like it has threads to screw into something. Is this a part of a porthole or window from a ship? PAR Posted March 4, 2012 Report Share Posted March 4, 2012 You have a "light" not a port hole. A light is a fixed glass, in a frame, usually attached (possably screwed to) another frame. It's purpose is to permit light to enter the boat without leaks. A port is an opening light, usually has hinges and a dog or two to lock it closed.
