Alan Stewart
Re: sailing in very heavy air... I have had good success sailing Southbound (CS17) solo in high winds (20-30 knots) using only the reefed mizzen in it's aft (normal) position. I take the main mast out and stick the base under the foredeck with the tip hanging out behind the transom off to one side so as not to interfere with steering. I found that the windage from the bow was enough to counter the weather helm from having just the mizzen up and if done carefully, I was even able to tack through the wind in this configuration albeit not as great angles. Reaching or down it was a blast. -Alan
