A beach cruising trip on 12/14/07 with the West Coast Trailer Sailing Squadron (Florida, USA)

My sailing trip was interesting.  I went down to Pine Island on Friday.  There were four boats.  We camped, some on their boats and some including myself in tents pitched on the beach.  It rained and then after we were all wet, we had a beautiful sunset.  Saturday was a very blustery day.  I had a lot of practice in reefing and unreefing which was good.  The sailing was great.  After hearing the forecast for a very bad front coming Saturday evening most of us decided to go home.  Saturday night at home on Clearwater Beach we had gusts to 40 knots so I was very glad I was not camping in the tent on the beach.

One other learned experience, the Anderson bailer works great as long as you are moving but if you forget about it in the excitement then it works in reverse also.  Naturally, I noticed when I slowed down and my feet got wet.

Here are a few photos.

Nice story, great pictures, sounds like a great time!...Some day, I'd like to take a ride over to Clearwater and see your project. Being from Port St. Lucie it would only be a 2 or 3 hr trip...Mike

Come on over anytime, Mike.  Let me know when so we can hook up.  I am always showing "Lively" to interested folks.

Maybe you could make it to one of our club sails.  Our club is WCTSS West Coast Trailer Sailing Squadron.  Here is the website.  http://members.ij.net/wctss/wctss/

If you could provide some good sailing site we may make a trip over your way.  However, we usually stay on the West Coast or near Keys.

Dale, I am a freshman on my recently completed CS boat. I see that you have beach camped. Please tell me how you anchored your boat. I see it is tied to a tree or something and what about from the stern. Was there much of a tide?

I would appreciate the advice.

Bob,

If you are from Alaska, there will be no comparison to beach camping in Florida and Alaska.  In Florida, we have mostly sand beaches and very shallow water.  Beach camping many times means tying up to a tree on shore or anchoring on beach with a small anchor off the stern.  However, many times by choice I choose places where I may spend half the night completely aground.  Since the photos above I now have a cabin for my boat which encloses all the space forward of the mizzen mast.  I was camping ashore when the above trip was taken in 2007.

I have taken many beach camping trips since then and feel that my Core Sound 17 'Lively' is very well suited to Florida's shallow waters.  I love sailing in the shallows using the centerboard as my depth finder.  The wild life and scenery is much more beautiful in the shallows.

Hope this answers your question.

Dale
