Denis Goyette
OK ! I have read over and over, i must be missing something. First: the the stringer at the Stern of the hull bottom.....Is it a stringer or is it a 1x4 mark to the curve and cut???? Second: the stringer that is across the hull where the forward bulkhead goes against is it at 24 inches away fron the stem edge or 24 inches from the front edge of the hull bottom and do you use the right angle(90) of the stringer against the bulkhead ? ?? :? :? :? Thanks Again Denis [attachment over 4 years old deleted by admin]
Barry Pyeatt
The back edge of the stringer at the front bulkhead is 24" from the stem where it intersects the bottom. You can use a 3/4" square piece of stringer material or use a 90 degree side against the bulkhead/bottom. Remember, it doesn't extend all the way across the bottom, you allow space for the mast box inbetween two shorter stringer sections on either side. The transom uses a bent piece of 3/4 X 15/16 stringer, it is generally kerfed to make the double bend easier. Once it is attached to the bottom you can then try to bend the bottom to match the transom. But if you think ahead and bend the bottom to match the lower edge of the transom with blocks and clamps and then bend the transom to match the curve of the rear of the bottom with blocks and clamps you can easily glue/screw the two together. This requires a block in the middle of the transom and a heavy piece of 2X material to clamp the edges of the transom to it to bend the curve before attaching it. (Same with the bottom). Otherwise it is all muscle and fighting it into place. There are several discussions about this and some photos in the galleries. I posted a couple in the Gallery under "Saga of Spirit Wind" that may help.
Simon
Not meaning to be picky, but am I right in thinking that a 'stringer' is a gusset that runs the length of the boat? Other gussets would just be .... well gussets.
Barry Pyeatt
If a stringer is vertical it is referred to as a gusset, if it is horizontal it is a stringer. Strictly terminology. Just like in a window, verticals are stiles, horizontals are rails.
Simon
Maybe we're both right? 1. stringer [n.] 1. A long horizontal timber to connect uprights. , 2. A longitudinal member to strengthen a fuselage or hull.
Arnie Eaton
A lot of builders have made the rear bottom stringer from 2x material for both vacationers and weekenders. I used a 2X6 and cut to fit on my Vac. No bending that way at least for the stringer. Just bend the bottom and transom to meet the stringer and glue and screw.
