I noticed that in the pictures, the 17 has a decked over stern area while the 20 does not. Is this feature optional in both boats? I would prefer not to have it so that I could hang a small outboard or trolling motor more easily.

You can have either option on both boats. There is a side stringer for the seat tops which runs to the stern, so you cut the aft bulkhead down to the side stringer height if you want the open stern layout. The seat tops fill in from the aft bulkhead to the transom giving easier access to an outboard. Of course the transom top needs to be beefed up to make up for loss of the aft deck.
