Tall Mast Tabernacle Picture?

John Stevens

Recommended Posts

A while back I saw a picture of a sailboat ( I think it was a weekender) with a mast tabernacle that stood about 1.5-2 feet off the cabin top. The mast had a bolt going through it like a hinge. I believe it made the mast easier to raise. Does anyone know the boat or have a picture of it? And... any feedback on raising the mast with that kind of a tabernacle?

Lastly, where do you buy a one?

TIA,

John

The stock Weekender plans feature a hinge for the mast tabernacle, but several of us have adopted other designs. Having a higher tabernacle with a pivot point is pretty common, and what I choose (although I don't think its the one you originally saw, as you can't see a bolt through mine when it was finished ... here are three pics showing how an angled cut in the mast and two side straps work great):

I have more on this method at my personal web site http://users2.ev1.net/~fshagan/masttab.htm

It is a common tabernacle design. B&B Yacht's Princess 22 utilizes it in a slightly different manner:

Maybe Frank has posted the pictures you were thinking of.

I did a taller than normal tabernacle on my Weekender. It is still hinged with a gate hinge but I made a stainless fitting that goes up the sides of the tabernacle and the mast. At the top of the fitting there is a band that goes around the front of the mast. I used stainless truss head bolts to attach this thing to the tabernacle and to the mast when it is up. The bolts go into coupler nuts epoxied in place. The whole thing is very smooth so there's little for the lacing to get hung up on. Truss head bolts have a very low profile dome shape like a carriage bolt but there's no square shoulder under it and the head is slotted. There's a bit picture here:
