Alan Stewart Posted March 6 Posted March 6 In case you're not on our newsletter, here is a link to the info on our race. Much to my Dad's chagrin I thought it would be super cool to livestreaam our race from the boat so we're going to give that a go! Wish us luck! https://bandbyachtdesigns.substack.com/p/everglades-challenge-2026-live 3 1 Quote
Andy B Posted March 7 Posted March 7 The live stream is awesome, Alan! We still have snow here so I can live vicariously through your stream! I'm not sure if it will inspire me or distract me from working on my mast float! Quote
Steve W Posted March 8 Posted March 8 I've been checking in on and off since you started. If all goes well, I plan on doing the EC for the first time next year. I'm curious how much you use the spinnaker as I don't currently have one. Quote
Oyster Posted March 9 Posted March 9 So far this year no real extreme weather related drama. Is there a reason that no rowing is taking place? Quote
Alan Stewart Posted March 9 Author Posted March 9 Haha. This year we didn't bring a spinnaker or oars. We were up to the wire getting the boat done and wisely I think prioritized the windvane getting done. So far we wouldn't have used a spinnaker much def not required. We thought oars for this boat would be too ungainly since the coaming is so high bet we are rethinking that. The mirage drive off the transom really didn't impress. We didn't even bring it. Our only mode of aux propulsion is 2 stand up paddles which works quite well especially if you do it from the low side the coaming is narrow and its easy to do a normal stroke and the heel brings the wayer closer to you. 4 Quote

We are tired of rowing. We wouldn't row just because there isn't wind unless we were really racing hard. We're trying to use our brains more than our muscle this go around. Sleep more think harder. 2 Quote
Oyster Posted March 9 Posted March 9 So what you are saying, you are on a sub Caribbean cruise , but without the buffet and magic shows? Thanks for the clarification and the live streaming video. Its been a bunch of years since you paddled, sailed and peddled your way around Florida at break neck speeds and we waited a while for any progress reports. Quote
Reacher Posted March 9 Posted March 9 Alan, please comment on the wind vane…it looks like you are relying on it even in light wind conditions. Thanks. 1 Quote
Alan Stewart Posted March 9 Author Posted March 9 Well weve been doing it every year just not always a trip report. But last 2 years weve been in the 17mk3. yes the windvane is quite happy to steer in any wind above about 3 or 4 knots of apparent wind no problem. So far we've probably hand steered less than 10% of the time. 2 Quote
Mike Vacanti Posted March 9 Posted March 9 Thank you for going to the trouble of live streaming your race. I'm getting a kick out of it. 1 Quote
Oyster Posted March 11 Posted March 11 You finally got some wind , with a bumpy ride this afternoon. We had it on while working on a boat and followed you from your calm and dark morning. I did see a paddle though. Quote
Steve W Posted March 11 Posted March 11 Alan, I want a windvane! I also know a boat very similar to mine that has one that seems to work very well. When you get done screwing around in Florida , we need to talk. I've been staring at the live feed for far too long with my head tipped sideways in amazement. Take Care, Steve 3 Quote
Reacher Posted March 12 Posted March 12 Alan, thanks for the live stream. The perspective was good. The sound of the water flowing past the boat was music to northern ears. Congratulations on the race. 1 1 Quote

Jonathan M. Cohn Posted March 28 Posted March 28 I just got a Starlink mini in order to have internet where its not available on cellular. Any tips for placement on the boat? Did you just have it setting back on the starboard side roughly pointed North? Any tips? I wish I had the power to livestream the Texas 200 but I think I'll save the batteries for fans! Loved your livestream. Quote
Alan Stewart Posted March 29 Author Posted March 29 A cool video of MadMothist Leaving Flamingo using the pedal drive. hard to tell how much work the sails are doing but obviously the pedal drive is assisting well though that channel is very narrow so he ran aground. Love the huge bowsprit too. Tom has this cool longer video too from around Flamingo... Quote
