Hirilonde Posted May 13 Report Posted May 13 Found this picture on line, just thought is was a good way to show the differences. Quote
Andy B Posted May 13 Report Posted May 13 Thanks, Dave. Is there really that much room in a luff pocket? Lasers have sleeved sails, as does my Sea Pearl, and there's not that amount of looseness to make the sail look like picture "D". But maybe this is something different. Quote
Hirilonde Posted May 13 Author Report Posted May 13 Andy B, the drawings might all be exaggerations, but it does make the entry into the wind more fair. Quote
Alan Stewart Posted May 14 Report Posted May 14 The luff pocket sails usually need full length battens as well as a lot of shape in the luff with forced mast bend from downhaul compression or sheet tension. Some moths and windsurfers use them. A regular sleeve luff is more similar to sail track or bolt rope although probably a bit better but if your sailing speed is not at least approaching wind speed I'm sure the extra complication is wasted. Some of the new wing foil hand wings are using full double skins around the cylindrical leading edge with very low drag for faster upwind speeds and better tacking angles. 1 Quote
