tomstock
I just posted some recent pics of my Weekender project in the gallery. Anyone know what type of hardwood that is? It's a brownish/greyish/purple color when freshly cut, just like the pic. When laquered, it was more of a brown color. Tom

Frank Hagan
Can't really tell, but the surface grain looks like black walnut. But where its cut, it looks "softer" (if that makes sense ... black walnut is a pretty hard wood and doesn't have open end grain like appears in the photo). If its fairly hard, so hard that you have trouble denting it with a fingernail, my vote would be walnut. Here's a pic of unfinished American black walnut from http://www.virginiagalleries.com/Images/: Any other opinions?
Pat Mellema
Frank That is what I thought it was when I saw it.
Frank Hagan
The color on the two pics don't match very well, but I thought the grain pattern looked about the same. Mahogany has a finer grain usually, without the "wildness" of walnut. Either way, its beautiful wood, well worth a "dumpster dive"!
tomstock
Thanks guys. BTW they are just installed temporarily in that pic... I'll round (the bottom) and refinish them later... Tom
