Kennneee
I came across an old album of the “kid” I once was that had more energy than money and common sense. Built a steel sailboat in a pasture with 2 refrigerators for the tools I borrowed to start the build, an electric fence to keep the horses out and a $250 welder from Montgomery Wards. A different wife and a different life. Didn’t know what I didn’t know! Some kids never grow up! Ken 1
Jknight611
Pretty boat Ken, did you make many passages with her? Colin Archer looking hull form. We briefly considered building a steel Spray…..briefly, very briefly.
PadrePoint
Blows me away. I enjoy seeing (and imagining what it takes to do) big projects that people take on for themselves and succeed pulling off successfully.
Kennneee
Jay- We lived aboard for 7 years and cruised for 3. Spent a lot of time between Northern California and Panama and the Caribbean to Florida. Wonderful time in my life! I think you built the right boat. That said, steel saved our skin but that is another story, arhhh! Ted- Being young and full of dreams gets you through a lot of obstacles. Still a dreamer but a bit less ambitious. PadrePoint
Kennneee, This was my 11 foot high school build. My son renovated it recently, painting over the original red/white paint and replacing my plywood deck. (I had found an old-time marine guy who repaired my broken 1956 30 hp Johnson.) In high school, I meant it to be a precursor to a 16’ version with a 100hp motor when I became an adult… with lots of money. Married at 20 and having four kids by 30 kept me from justifying that hoped-for dream-build. With retirement, a couple months following my Core Sound 15 kit-build, I pulled the trigger on buying a new 60hp Honda for my next build (the horsepower reduction is part of being older .) I then built the boat below (the subject of many years of daydreaming ) from the plans I had bought in the early 1980’s. I shortened the build to 15 feet, letting me use the 8 foot plywood and 16 foot planks that I bought from B&B, matching the color scheme of the sailboat and naming them for my parents (Norma T and Joe.) I could start using Joe this summer. The grandkids can’t get enough of the tube riding. Wait till they learn to knee board and waterski behind it. I’m not sure if another build is in me… although I’m really taken by B&B’s emerging SR20.
Kennneee
Ted- You can never have to many boats. A few months after you finish, our senior brains forget how much effort the last one took and off we go….. Enjoy! Ken
Jknight611
Boy, ain’t that the truth! I have been measuring for a dingy to discuss with Graham an Alan at the Messabout. Meanwhile, using an inflatable kayak, till I fall in….
