OK, I have gone away from the wtaer based poly finish. It went on 'sorta' well, though there are still marks where the brush was.

I bought McCloskey Man O War Spar Varnish. Easier to apply than Epephane and a lot cheaper too.

Question; I switched to Satin rather than gloss(gloss shows too many little imperfections). The Satin is very dull, more like a matte finish. Is this normal with a satin varnish? I figure satin meant a slight gloss (as in house paints and spray paints).

I think what you are seeing is normal. You can try mixing the satin and gloss together and see what it looks like on a test piece.
