Guest Dennis
I have been eyeing the Spindrift 12 as a possible build. It would be used solely in lakes and rivers. I think it would be easier to set up, rig, and sail in these venues than my 17fter. So, my question is, can the rig be changed to a sprit boom leg-o-mutton (like the BRS and CS boats)? Sail area would remain the same. But would the sail's COE remain unchanged, or would it require some fiddling with mast step and partner? Thanks, Dennis
Guest Anonymous
Yes it can be rigged with a leg o' mutton sail. We have put it on a S10. The foot of the sail needs to be increased to eliminate the lee helm that would be the result of the roachless main. The mast step would not need to be altered. While this rig could be used, it would not be any easier to rig and use than the standard rig - which sets up ready to go in just a couple of minutes. The rig as designed, is easys to set up - slip the sail over the mast, the boom is attached with a fast pin at the gooseneck and the vang/downhaul/outhaul and mainsheet all have snap hooks. The lines all remain in the boat for stowage and travelling, so there is very little set up. Several times over the years we've been distracted and suddenly realized that the starting gun for the starting sequence has gone off - we've been able to rush over, rig the boat get it in the water and sail to the line and be ready at the start (5 minutes later). If you like the rig go for it, although you might give up a little bit of perfomance on this model.
