Guest Jeff
I am wondering if the keel is required for a Spindrift 12. The boat will be used for sailing only. The advantage of not having a keel is a little less weight for transportation and less holes in the wood. Will the absence of a keel affect performance? Designer
For sailing only you don't need the keel. When you are rowing she will wander off course when you stop. When motoring she will handle a little better with a keel and if she is towed you need it. At least half of our S10 racing fleet don't have keels and there is no noticable difference in performance with or without keels.
