Tgabe
Should I paint (and primer) the inside of the centerboard trunk before I assemble and install it, or is it sufficient to have three coats of epoxy and fg cloth without the paint? What have others done? CS17 #
Jknight611
I didn't paint ours, no sun can get there, the epoxy/cloth is sufficient. I did add West System barrier coat to the last coat of epoxy, mostly because I had it on hand from another project.
Hirilonde
On my Spindrift I painted into the top of the trunk a couple inches because I could reach there and see there. It is now 11 years old and going strong. As a matter of fact, I am going to Georgia next week and will do some rowing and sailing in it with my grandson. PAR
I embedded a Teflon sheet on each side of the case. I "carmilized" the Teflon with a few passes of a torch and dropped it into fresh goo, during assembly. I did the same on the centerboard sides that remained in the case with the board fully deployed. I did this because of the exceptionally close fit I had in the case and after 8 years, shows no issues other than the expected scuff marks. My CS case was fully closed top, so no paint was necessary, as light couldn't get below, even if stored uncovered outside.
JPower210
I put graphite in the last couple of coats of epoxy, which I also did on the centerboard. Painted down an inch or two when I did the interior, more for looks than anything else. JP
Paul356
Did not paint the inside of the trunk. Reached/will reach inside from top and bottom with brush or roller as far as I could when painting bottom and cockpit.
Don Silsbe
Yeah, don't do it. There's plenty of other stuff to paint. It'll be fine.
Greg Luckett
I used carbon added to the epoxy. It is hard, durable, and slick. If I could figure out how to add pictures here, I would post some. I did post a picture from the 2008/09 Spindrift 12 build, if you dig around you should find it here somewhere.
